Caption: Light micrograph of a cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), Merismopedia. This freshwater organism forms large flat colonies, an example of which is seen here. At the centre of this colony a space has formed containing several elongated diatoms, whereas the cyanobacteria are the small coffee bean shapes around it. Cyanobacteria have a different internal structure to the algae. They are prokaryotic organisms with no membrane-bound nucleus. Instead their nuclear material is dispersed throughout the cell like that of the bacteria. Likewise their chloroplasts are not restricted by a membrane but lie free in the cell.
