Caption: Snowflake. Centre of a dendritic snowflake (or snow crystal). Snowflakes are symmetrical ice crystals that form in calm air at a temperature near the freezing point of water. The exact shape of each snowflake will depend on local climatic conditions, mainly air temperature and humidity. They typically have hexagonal symmetry, as seen here. A dendritic snowflake, which forms at around -15 degrees Celsius, has a branching star-shaped structure. No two snowflakes are identical, as each experiences a wide range of conditions as it forms.
