Caption: Light micrograph of a colony of the cyanobacterium Coelosphaerium dubium. Cyanobacteria were formerly known as blue-green algae, but although they resemble the algae in size and in the ability to photosynthesize, their internal structure was found to be much closer to that of the bacteria. Like the bacteria, they are prokaryotic organisms. The method of cell division, the copious production of mucilage and the abscence of any sexual stages in the life history all indicate that the group is closer to the bacteria than to the algae. Magnification: x40 at 35mm size.
