Caption: Hoar frost. Crystals of hoar frost on leaves of the garden lupin, Lupinus polyphyllus. Hoar frost consists of prismatic ice crystals which grow on surfaces during frosty nights of high humidity. The crystals have hexagonal symmetry, as do snowflakes, but instead of growing as a star (dendritic crystals) they grow as a six-sided tube (prismatic crystals). The change of form is due to the temperature during crystal growth; prismatic crystals like this only form at between -5 to -8 degrees Celsius.
