Caption: Fog in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA. The Grand Canyon extends for nearly 450 kilometres along the course of the Colorado River. It reaches a width of 29 kilometres at its widest point, and a depth of over 1.7 kilometres at its deepest. It formed as the entire plateau was uplifted, and the Colorado River cut into the underlying rock. The canyon was formed in the last few million years, but the oldest rocks in the formation date back over one billion years.
