Caption: Nostoc algae. Light micrograph of Nostoc sp., a filamentous blue-green alga or cyanobacterium. The pink strands are colonies of primitive, single- celled, prokaryotic organisms, more closely relat- ed to bacteria than to algae. Nostoc sp. algae have the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, thereby playing a major role in soil fertility. It has a wide distribution and is commonly found in soil and on mud, rocks and other plants. It also forms the symbiotic algal partner of a number of lichens. Blue green algae are considered to be exceedingly primitive organisms, dating back to the pre-Cambrian period (over 600 million years ago). Magnification: x100 at 35mm size.
