Cyanobacteria are primitive, prokaryotic organisms which have their nuclear material dispersed throughout the cell. They make their food by photosynthesis in primitive, thread-like structures called lamellae. Some Spirulina species are eaten as a protein-rich health food. Differential contrast image.
