Caption: Mirage. Mirage of distant islands formed over water. A mirage may be seen when the layer of air closest to the ground is warmer than the air immediately above it. Typically such a layer is above a sunlit road or sandy area. This causes an unusual refractive effect which produces an inverted image of a distant object as well as a direct view of the object. Here, one may see islands and the horizon, with an inverted image of them directly above. The heated layer is probably due to the low island in the middle distance.
