Caption: Lighthouse and solar halo. Image of the optical atmospheric effect known as a halo or corona around the solar disc above a lighthouse. The halo consists of one or more coloured rings located symmetrically around the Sun, caused by the diffraction of light passing through water droplets. The rings usually extend for a few solar radii and the width of each ring is inversely related to the diameter of the water droplets causing it. The same phenomenon may be seen around the lunar disc.
