Caption: This oblique view of tropical storm Sam was photographed from the space shuttle. It was born in the eastern Indian Ocean near the islands of Timor and Sumba in Indonesia. The storm tracked southwestward attaining sustained winds in excess of 60 knots (110 km/hour). This shot shows the storm as it begins to dissipate over the south Indian Ocean. The eye of the storm is still visible near the centre, with the swirling bands of cloud propagating in a clockwise direction towards it. Winds aloft have begun to shear the tops of thunderclouds associated with the storm, forming a high cirrus cloud cover over the central area.
