Caption: Tropical storm. Family standing on a beach watching an approaching tropical storm. Tropical storms form when there is large scale evaporation and convection over areas of warm sea surface, typically during the late summer months. Dense clouds bring violent thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds. This is tropical storm 'Kyle', which made landfall in South Carolina, USA on October 11, 2002. Kyle lasted for 22 days, making it the third longest-lived Atlantic tropical cyclone to that date.
