Caption: Gust front. Shelf cloud (grey, centre) at a gust front above a field. A shelf cloud forms when cold air from a thunderstorm drops beneath a cloud and moves outwards from under it. This pushes warm air up over the top of the cloud, forming a gust front that can lead to the formation of a new thunderstorm. This was previously a supercell (severe) thunderstorm. Photographed in Tornado Alley, USA.
