Caption: Cyanobacteria, light micrograph. These are filaments (brown) of cyanobacteria, with the detail of individual strands and the cells forming the strands seen at lower right. For a more magnified view of the cells, see B307/182. Cyanobacteria (formerly known as blue-green algae) are a photosynthesising form of bacteria. They were among the first lifeforms to appear on Earth, and oxygenated the atmosphere. They are found worldwide in most habitats, including oceans, fresh water, and soil.
