Caption: Lightning. Spectacular display of cloud to ground lightning. Note how the branch of the lightning 'fork' which reaches the ground is considerably brighter than the rest of the branches. This is because the branch that reaches the ground carries the 'return stroke' from the ground to the cloud - this is many times more powerful than the branching downward stroke.
