Caption: Lightning strike over a barn on a prairie in Missouri. Lightning originates in cumulonimbus clouds when rain is carried upward and converted into ice some 15,000 to 25,000 feet above sea level. The charge created then travels down toward the ground in 50 yard increments (step leaders), producing a channel along which the charge is deposited when it encounters a good connection on the ground. Approximately 30 million points on the ground are struck each year in the U.S. Enhancement of 3g3132.
