Caption: A field of drought stricken sugar beet with wilted leaves. Wilting is caused by water stress at the roots; the result is the closing of the stomata at the leaf surfaces to conserve what water there is. The leaves become flaccid, thereby presenting less area to the heat of the sun & drying winds.
