Caption: Aral Sea boats stranded by retreating water. The Aral Sea is an inland sea between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. It was supplied entirely by rivers, but in the 1930s these were diverted so that they could irrigate crops, notably cotton. This meant much less water flowed to the sea, which began shrinking due to evaporation. The Aral Sea has halved in area since the 1960s, and its salinity has increased dramatically. This has had a profound impact in the area, leaving ghost towns that were once thriving fishing communities. Rising salinity has also severely damaged the ecosystem.
