Caption: Tornado. Storm chaser observing a tornado from a crop field. A tornado is a violent, rotating column of air characterised by a funnel-shaped cloud. The air column, which may be up to 100 metres in diameter, can cause widespread devastation. Wind speeds of over 500 kilometres per hour have been reported in tornados. Tornados are most common in the mid-west USA. This one was photographed in South Dakota in June 2003.
