Caption: Ascophyllum algae. Light micrograph of a section through a thallus of the brown algae Ascophyllum nodosum. Two rounded reproductive structures known as conceptacles are seen at upper frame containing many male antheridia (microsporangia). These clusters of antheridia produce male germ cells which are capable of fertilising female eggs of this algae. Cells which make up the thallus are also visible. Ascophyllum nodosum is a common marine alga found on European shores in the colder north Atlantic. Magnification: x24 at 35mm size. Magnification: x90 at 4x5inch
