Caption: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration satellite image of Hurricane Alicia, taken with an infra-red scanner in black & white (top) & colour (bottom) on the 17th August 1983. The image records the temperature distribution across the spiralling hurricane in degrees kelvin (see scale at top of images - 0 celsius = 273K). Note the higher temperature in the "eye" of the hurricane, the central circular feature.
