Caption: Golden brown algae shells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of marine plankton during its coccolithophorid or resting stage. During this alga's resting stage it produces a shell-like test or coccolith (calcareous plate), which has a distinctive mushroom-like shape. These tests are often found as fossils and are a major constituent of chalk (limestone) deposits. Magnification: x15,000 at 6x7cm size.
