Caption: Golden-brown alga. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a tropical coccolithophorid alga. The main structure of the alga is at centre (red), but during its resting stage it produces mushroom-shaped extensions (yellow/brown). The plates surrounding the alga and the extensions are called coccoliths and are made of calcium carbonate. Coccolithophorids are a constituent of marine plankton.
