Caption: Electron-quark interaction in the ZEUS detector at DESY, the German particle physics laboratory in Hamburg. The computer display shows the cylindrical detector outlined in red. An unseen electron has entered from left & an unseen proton from right, accelerated in DESY's HERA collider. When they meet at centre, the electron collides with one of the three quarks making up the nucleus of the proton & is deflected almost back on itself (white track and red spike to upper left). The struck quark is also deflected; it immediately creates new quarks and antiquarks to form the jet of particles that show up as the tracks and coloured blocks at bottom left.
