Caption: False-colour satellite image of the 16 October 1987 storm over the UK. The core of the storm is seen just right of centre. Part of the southern UK is seen in green below and to the left, with continental Europe near the bottom of the frame. Two residual storm cells are seen over the south coast of the UK. This image was made at 11.00am, some hours after the storm had passed over the UK. The storm caused extensive damage to trees and buildings in the early hours of 16 October 1987, primarily in the south-east of the UK. Wind gusts of over 160 km/h were recorded. This image was made using data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer of the NOAA 6 satellite.
