Caption: Coloured satellite image showing Hurricane Hugo as it struck the U.S. coastline at South Carolina on the 22nd of September 1989. Hugo, whose maximum sustained wind speeds of 260kmh made it the strongest Hurricane of that year, began as a cluster of storms detected off the coast of Africa on September 9th. It went on to leave a trail of destruction across the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and South and North Carolina. Damage was estimated at ten billion U.S. dollars and 49 lives were lost. The photograph was taken by infrared cameras on board the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES).
