Caption: National Hurricane Center. Meteorologists manning the Tropical Prediction Center, Miami, USA, which is fed data from a Hercules plane flown by the US Air Force Hurricane Hunters team. The plane is equipped with instruments to measure meteoro- logical parameters, such as wind speed, humidity and atmospheric pressure. These data are then relayed to the center, where computer models help predict the storm's future direction. These models have an accuracy of 70%, which allows authorities to implement damage limitation procedures. The path of Hurricane Floyd (September 1999), is seen being tracked the a map, it caused 57 deaths and 1.3 billion US dollars of damage.
