Caption: National Hurricane Center. Meteorologist briefing on the progress of Hurricane Floyd (September 1999). The satellite image assists in establishing a flight path for the US Air Force Hurricane Hunters Team. The team fly a Hercules plane through hurricanes to gather data. The plane is equipped with instruments to measure meteoro- logical parameters, such as wind speed, humidity & atmospheric pressure. These data are then modelled on computer to help predict the storm's future direction. These models have an accuracy of 70%, which allows authorities to implement damage limitation procedures. Hurricane Floyd caused 57 deaths and 1.3 billion US dollars of damage.
