Caption: Hurricane weather briefing. Meteorologist updating a member of the US Air Force Hurricane Hunters Team on Hurricane Floyd (September 1999). Satellite images are used to establish a flight path for the team to fly the Hercules plane through the hurricane. The plane is equipped with instruments to measure meteorological parameters, such as wind speed, humidity and atmospheric pressure. These data are then modelled on computer to help predict the storm's future direction. These models have an accuracy of 70%, which allows authorities to implement damage limitation proce- dures such as evacuations. Hurricane Floyd caused 57 deaths and 1.3 billion US dollars of damage.
