Caption: Hurricane Floyd map. The map shows the hurricane off the coast of Cuba (centre left) in September 1999. This information is used by the US Air Force Hurricane Hunters team to establish a flight path. The team fly a Hercules plane through hurricanes to gather data. The plane is equipped with instruments to measure meteorological parameters, such as wind speed, humidity and atmospheric pressure. These data are then modelled on computer to help predict the storm's future direction. These models have an accuracy of 70%, which allows authorities to implement damage limitation procedures. Hurricane Floyd caused 57 deaths and 1.3 billion US dollars of damage.
