Caption: Hurricane Floyd. Coloured infrared satellite image of Hurricane Floyd in the Caribbean Sea. This image was used by the US Air Force Hurricane Hunters team to plan their flight path. The team fly a Hercules plane through hurricanes to gather data. The plane is equipped with instruments to measure meteorological parameters, such as wind speed, humidity and atmospheric pressure. These data are then modelled on computer to help predict the storm's future direction. These models have an accuracy of 70%, which allows authorities to implement damage limitation procedures such as evacuations. Hurricane Floyd caused 57 deaths and 1.3 billion US dollars of damage.
