Caption: Hurricane Isabel approaching the east coast of the USA on 17th September 2003. At upper right is the hook-shaped Cape Cod peninsula, with the Florida peninsula at lower left. The shallow seas (light blue) around the Bahamas in the Caribbean Sea are at bottom left. Isabel was classified as a type 5 hurricane, the strongest, but had weakened slightly by the 17th September. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kilometres per hour. They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly once over land. This image was taken by Aqua satellite.
