Caption: Hurricane Isabel. Coloured doppler radar image of hurricane Isabel on the east coast of the USA. This image was taken at 14:40 GMT on 18th September 2003. The colours relate to rainfall, with blue and black being the lightest, through green and yellow to orange and red (the heaviest). The heaviest areas on this chart, showing readings of around 50 DBZ, indicate a rainfall of over 50 millimetres per hour. Data such as this can be used to help predict the behaviour of storms and other severe weather systems. Towns in the state of North Carolina are marked on this chart.
