Caption: Hurricane Charley in the Caribbean Sea, on 11th August 2004. Cuba is directly above Charley. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kilometres per hour. They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly over land. At the time this image was taken Charley was classified as a type 1 (weakest) hurricane. Image taken by the MODIS instrument on the Aqua satellite.
