Caption: Hurricane Frances. Satellite image of Hurricane Frances passing north of the Caribbean islands of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola (lower centre). This is 12:15 GMT on 1 September 2004. Hurricane Frances continued slowly to the north-west and passed over the Bahamas (upper left) before it reached Florida (top left) on 3-5 September 2004. Hurricanes are enormous rotating tropical storm systems. The winds can reach over 240 kilometres an hour, causing immense damage and flooding. Image from the GOES weather satellite.
