Caption: Hurricane Ivan over the Caribbean Sea, on 9th September 2004 at 1945 GMT. Ivan is just off the coast of Colombia (lower left). Cuba is at upper left, with Jamaica just underneath. The island of Haiti and the Dominican Republic are hidden underneath the top edge of Ivan. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kilometres per hour. They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly over land. At the time this image was taken Ivan was classified as a category 4 hurricane, but its winds have reached more than 230 kilometres per hour. Image taken by the NOAA- 12 weather satellite.
