Caption: Hurricane Hernan off Baja California, Mexico, on 1st September 2002. Hernan peaked here as a Category 5 hurricane, with winds exceeding 230 kilometres per hour. Later it weakened and moved out into the eastern Pacific. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems. They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly over land. Image taken by the MODIS instrument on board NASA's Aqua satellite.
