Caption: Hurricane Rita. Rainfall data acquired by the TRRM satellite, showing Hurricane Rita over the Gulf of Mexico at 00:50 UTC on 22nd September 2005. North is at top. Hurricane Rita reached Category 5 strength on 21st September. From here, it moved north-west, towards Houston, Texas, USA (upper left of Gulf of Mexico coastline). The US mainland and Mexico are seen across top and at lower left. Cuba is at lower right. Rita is the ninth hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, and among the most intense ever. It formed only a few weeks after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Louisiana and Mississippi coastline (left of upper centre).
