Caption: Hurricane researcher dropping a dropwindsonde probe from an aircraft into hurricane Ophelia on 14th September 2005. The dropwindsonde descends by parachute to the surface, measuring atmospheric conditions as it falls. It measures air temperature, atmospheric pressure, dewpoint and windspeed. The aircraft is a Lockheed WP-3D Orion, operated by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Ophelia formed north of the Bahamas and moved northwards up the east coast of the USA, although it did not make landfall.
