Caption: Hurricane Gordon (upper centre) over the Atlantic Ocean on 15th September 2006. At this point Gordon was a category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 155 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 195 kilometres per hour. Gordon was the first major hurricane of the 2006 season. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kilometres per hour. They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly over land.
