Caption: Gonaives, Haiti, after hurricane Jeanne. This image was taken on 22nd September 2004 by the Ikonos satellite. The brown regions are mud and muddy flood waters, which permeate the entire city. Hurricane Jeanne hit Haiti on 20th September. Widespread deforestation of the hills in Haiti has left it very prone to flooding and landslides. Over 1500 people are known to have died in the flooding, and the number is certain to rise as disease and starvation take hold. For an image of the city a few days before the hurricane, see E780/902.
