Caption: Chalmette, Louisiana, after Hurricane Katrina, on 31st August 2005, Quickbird satellite image. Roads and buildings are seen submerged by flood waters. Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf of Mexico coast of the USA on 29th August 2005. Katrina was the third strongest hurricane ever to hit the USA, packing winds of over 230 kilometres per hour. Thousands died in the largely poor states of Louisiana and Mississippi. Levees holding back river, sea and lake water were breached, leaving many areas flooded. Around 80% of the nearby city of New Orleans was flooded and the city was ordered to be evacuated on 30th August 2005.
