Caption: New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, on 31st August 2005, Quickbird satellite image. Roads and buildings are seen submerged by flood waters. The roof of the Superdome stadium (lower right) was severely damaged by the hurricane. Katrina hit on 29th August 2005. Although many people fled the city before the hurricane hit, many thousands remained and thousands died. Katrina was the third strongest hurricane ever to hit the USA, packing winds of over 230 kilometres per hour. Levees that held back river, sea and lake water from the low-lying city were breached, leaving around 80% of the city flooded. The total evacuation of New Orleans was ordered on 30th August 2005.
