Caption: Biloxi after Hurricane Katrina. Aerial photograph of Biloxi, Mississippi, USA, on 30 August 2005, a day after Hurricane Katrina made landfall near here on 29 August 2005. Landfall is where the eye of a hurricane passes from the sea to the land. At this point, Katrina had winds of over 200 kilometres per hour. As well as the winds, the hurricane winds caused the sea to rise up onto the land in a storm surge many metres high. Here, the causeway roads connecting Biloxi with Ocean Springs have been destroyed (lower right). Hurricane Katrina killed thousands and devastated large areas of the US Gulf coast.
