Caption: Hurricane Katrina damage. House damaged by fallen trees in Long Beach, Mississippi, USA. This town is on the Gulf of Mexico coast, and around 90% of all buildings were destroyed when Katrine hit, on 29th August 2005. Katrina was a category four hurricane when it hit, and it left a huge trail of damage, most notably in New Orleans. There, failure of the levee flood defences meant that around 80% of the low-lying port city was flooded. Many hundreds lost their lives. Katrina was thought to have been the most costly natural disaster in US history at the time.
