Caption: Repairing power lines after hurricane Katrina. These technicians are working on the main street of Long Beach, Mississippi, USA, on 2nd September 2005, four days after Katrina hit the region. Katrina was a category four hurricane when it hit the Gulf of Mexico coast of the USA on 29th August. In Long Beach some 90% of buildings were destroyed, power and telephone lines were cut, and mobile telephone networks and running water were cut off. Worst affected, though, was the low- lying port city of New Orleans, Louisiana. Its levee flood defences failed, leaving 80% of the city under water. Katrina was the most costly natural disaster to hit the USA at the time.
