Caption: Hurricane Katrina damage in Gulfport, Mississippi, USA. Gulfport is on the Gulf of Mexico coast of Mississippi, and bore the brunt of Katrina, which arrived as a category four hurricane on 29th August 2005. All the seafront timber buildings were destroyed, and even the concrete structures suffered serious damage. Katrina left a trail of damage across much of the Gulf coast region, but worst affected was New Orleans. There, failure of the levee flood defences meant that around 80% of the low-lying port city was flooded. Many hundreds lost their lives. Katrina was thought to have been the most costly natural disaster in US history at the time.
