Caption: Storm damage analysis. Infrared SPOT satellite images being used to analyse the damage caused to forests in the region around Paris, France, before (left) and after (right) the severe storms that hit north-western Europe in December 1999. Vegetation is shown in red, and the image at right shows a reduced amount of vegetation due to the storm damage. The storms took place from 23-28 December 1999, with winds gusting up to 170 kilometres per hour. More than 90 people died and over 60,000 trees were uprooted or damaged in forests on the outskirts of Paris.
