Caption: Night-time illumination of the metallic cladding of the cupolas covering the gate piers on the Thames Flood Barrier, Woolwich, London. Officially opened in 1984, the project took 8 years to complete and cost nearly #500 million. The barrier consists of 10 moveable D- shaped gates supported by 9 concrete piers, each supporting the hydraulic machinery that lifts the gates into position. When not in use the gates rest in concrete sills on the bed of the river, causing no hindrance to river traffic.
