Caption: The Thames Flood Barrier, Woolwich, London. Officially opened in 1984, the project took 8 years to complete and cost nearly #500 million. The barrier consists of 10 moveable D- shaped gates supported by 9 concrete piers, each containing the hydraulic machinery which lifts the gates into position. The arm of one of the gates appears as the black, semi-circular object above the waterline. When not in use the gates rest in concrete sills on the bed of the river, causing no hindrance to river traffic.
