Caption: The Thames Flood Barrier, Woolwich, London. View of one of the nine piers of the barrier at dusk, with the Canary Wharf tower in the background. The barrier consists of 10 moveable D-shaped gates supported by 9 concrete piers, each containing the hydraulic machinery which lifts the gates into position. When not in use the gates rest in concrete sills on the bed of the river, causing no hindrance to river traffic. The barrier is intended to provide protection for London against tidal flooding, particularly where spring tides could combine with weather depressions to give excessively high water levels. Opened in 1984, it took 8 years to complete and cost #500 million.
